Dr. Hinshaw, a native of Wayne County, Indiana, developed an avid interest in
Medicine and Surgery early in his formative years, growing up on a farm in
nearby Fountain City, Indiana. While a high school student he attended a
lecture by and first met former Wayne County native, Dr. Charles Hufnagel.
Inspired by Dr Hufnagel's interests, work, and accomplishments, Mr. Hinshaw
pursued his medical education at Earlham College, University of Cincinnati, and
the University of Kentucky.
During his education at the University of Kentucky, Dr. Hinshaw entered
military service in the United States Navy, serving aboard nuclear powered
Polaris missile submarines. The nuclear submarine combined two rather exciting
disciplines, the conventional medical care of ships company, while dealing with
the special features of atmospheric medicine, deep sea diving, submarine rescue,
and nuclear medicine. Following military service he returned to the University
of Kentucky and pursued training in General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery. After
completing his surgical residencies, Dr. Hinshaw returned to this area and
joined General Surgeons, Inc.
General Surgeons, Inc., known as GSI, was the first surgical group to
incorporate in the State of Indiana. Under the guidance of Dr. George
Johnson and Dr. Kenneth Sherer, it provided a cooperative work environment that
greatly contributed to the improvement of surgical services and care for the
patients of the area and provided an organization for cooperative
consultation and continuing medical education for the physicians.
During his twenty five years of active practice here, Dr Hinshaw has
primarily been committed to the active practice of surgery in the
community. Towards the goal of improving medical care within the
community, a significant effort has been made to improve the personal knowledge,
as well as promoting the continuous upgrading of the knowledge base and quality
of care within the entire medical community. Additional efforts were made to
recruit and retain a cadre of well trained surgeons and physicians, as well as a
multitude of other activities that seek to improve the care available for
residents of this area. The management and development of General
Surgeons, Inc. and serving as a Director at Reid Hospital, were pursued towards
the continuing goal of meeting our community's present and future needs.
Following retirement from clinical practice, Dr. Hinshaw remains active as a
member of the Board of Directors, of Reid Hospital and Health Care Services.
