Dr. Kenneth S. Woodman
Kenneth Woodman was born in Philadelphia, PA on December 7, 1933. His family moved to Louisville,
Kentucky, in 1945, where he graduated Louisville Male HS in 1951. He
attended Harvard University, majored in Biochemistry, played on the
freshman and varsity basketball teams, and graduated in 1955. He graduated
medical school at the University of Pennsylvania in 1959. He then went to
Cincinnati General Hospital where he completed a year of internship, one
year of anesthesia residency, and six years of surgical training.
From September 10, 1967 to September 11, 1969
he served in the Medical Corp of the United States Army, including
stints at Fort Sam Houston, Fort Gordon, Valley Forge General Hospital,
as well as one year in South Vietnam at the 3rd and 7th Surgical (MASH)
Hospitals. He was discharged on September 11, 1969.
Dr. Woodman's training was University based,
intensive and thorough. By the time he came to Richmond, Dr. Woodman had
been in training for fourteen years beyond high school. Dr. Woodman and
Dr. Johnson, in all of their recruiting for future members of General
Surgeons, Inc., insisted on this level of rigorous training for all
future members of the group. He feels that one of the most satisfying
aspects of his career " was to watch the development and growth of
GSI into the organization it is, and to know that the people in our area
were receiving top notch surgical care."
He married Carol Lee Farrar of Aurora, IN, in
1966. Anne was born in 1968 and Elizabeth (Beth) in 1971. His wife
passed away in 1975.
He joined General Surgeons, Inc. on
October 1, 1969, and practiced general, thoracic and vascular surgery
for 28 years on the staff of Reid Memorial Hospital. During this time,
he was chief of the Surgical Section three times, Chief of the Infection
Control Committee for many years, President of the Wayne County Medical
Society in 1990-91, first president of the Physician Hospital
Organization from 1994 to 1996, a member of the Board of the Indiana
Chapter of the American College of Surgeons for 12 years, President of
that organization (following in Dr. Johnson's footsteps) in 1990-1991,
and President of GSI from 1985 to 1996. He retired December 31, 1997.
Dr. Woodman, throughout his career, maintained an interest in
academic medicine and published articles in scientific journals. Here is
a partial listing of those articles.
1. Hepatic Lobectomy for Hepatoblastoma in Infants and Children, Arch
Surg
Jan 1969 Vol 98, 1-7
2. Transrectal Drainage of a Pelvic Abscess Using Endorectal Ultrasound
Guidance, J of Interventional Radiology, 1994, Vol 9, 173-176
Since his retirement Dr. Woodman spends time in
Florida, enjoying tennis and duplicate bridge. He does occasional case
analysis consultative work. During the summer of 1998 he was a general
surgeon at Northern Navaho Medical Center in Shiprock, New Mexico. He
still resides in Richmond.
